      • Suze-la-Rousse
      • The castle of Suze-la-Rousse, built on a rocky promontory and occupied by the Princes of Orange from the 12th to 15th century, is a spectacular medieval fortress protected by its towers and ramparts. The construction of the magnificent Renaissance court in the middle of the 16th century transformed the fortress into a residence worthy of the guests received there by the La Baume-Suze family: Charles IX and Catherine de Medicis.
The castle possesses remarkable interiors: a monumental grand staircase, a blue dining room decorated with 18th century plasterwork, the arms room, ...
A wooded park of 57 acres composed of Mediterranean vegetation, the "garenne" was formerly the hunting grounds of the lords of the castle. To be discovered in the park: a 17th century chapel, a ice chamber, a dovecote, and one of the rare vestiges of a real-tennis court (jeu de paume) built in the 16th century.
Nowadays, this castle is the property of the department of the Drôme.
